BOHEMIA, NY - In January 2016, DTB began a project to enhance its overall testing capabilities by increasing the ceiling height of the structural test facilities from approximately 22 feet to 40 feet. Driven by several new contracts for full static and fatigue testing of large aircraft sections, Tom Zimoulis, Senior Vice President of the Engineering and Test Division, proposed a major facility upgrade to handle the surge in structural test work, and to also leave room for expansion. The facility upgrade was approved by the Board of Directors in March 2016.

Vice President and Chief Engineer, Bill Bradshaw, explains, “When performing large structural tests, we are constantly limited by ceiling height. With large wings and other aircraft sections measuring upwards of 100 feet, it doesn’t take much in the way of deflection requirements for a ceiling to impede a test. By raising our roof to 40 feet, we significantly enhance our ability to handle all but the largest aircraft in this new facility.”

In addition to the higher ceiling height, the new structural test center has also been equipped with a new Spantec perimeter crane system with two five-ton bridge cranes to assist with the movement of test items and fixturing. We have upgraded the lighting, sprinkler, and HVAC systems for the larger volume of space in the new facility, and have made enhancements to our data acquisition capabilities and hydraulic system in order to handle the increased workload.

The Company expects to begin setting up for the first major program in the new facility in February and anticipates a steady flow of work through the next several years.
