DTB Wins Metro-North Railroad Contract

BOHEMIA, NY - Dayton T. Brown, Inc. (DTB) has been awarded a contract for $2.4 million from Metro-North Railroad (MNR) for engineering and support services associated with Positive Train Control (PTC).

With the approaching Federal Railroad Administration deadline of 2020 for operational PTC systems installed on the Northeast Corridor (NEC), MNR has chosen DTB to support field work associated with PTC implementation.

“We’re extremely proud that MNR has recognized the value that DTB brings to the table in assisting with the implementation of Positive Train Control,” remarked Tom Volpe, Senior Director of Business Development for DTB. “Our subject matter experts have unique experience and decades of relevant experience in this arena, and we can’t wait to get started on this project.”

DTB will provide rapid response teams to visit 90 locations on MNR property and the NEC to verify the operation of the PTC radio cases. The radio case is the heart of the PTC system and will provide critical safety data for onboard PTC systems, cab signaling, track transponders, wayside interlocking, dispatch control systems, and road worker protection systems. This data will be used to determine the criteria for emergency stopping, speed restrictions, location of the train, the allocation of tracks, and communications between tenant railroads throughout the NEC.

Given the urgency of the project, work on this contract is expected to begin immediately, with on-track field work expected to begin by the end of the year. Implementation of PTC is anticipated to have a major positive impact on railroad safety in the near future.
