Dayton T. Brown, Inc. Supports COVID-19 Front Line Health Care Workers with Face Shields

April 7, 2020 / Published in NEWS & EVENTS

To say that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken the world by storm would be a gross understatement. Hospitals across the country are struggling to treat the influx of patients, let alone keep themselves safe with the appropriate types of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Upon hearing how local hospitals are in desperate need of PPE, coupled with the Company’s strong desire to make a difference, DTB tapped into its manufacturing capabilities. Inspired by Stony Brook University’s initiative to use 3D printers to fabricate face shields, DJ Landwehrle and Lauren Leonelli, two DTB engineers, sprang into action with research and intensive planning. Together, with the help of many other DTB employees, the team produced a supply of 300 face shields by using the Company’s 3D printer and CNC machines to aid those on the front lines at Island Rehab and Mather Hospital.

“This is the least we can do,” said Angela Chewning, VP, Human Resources for Dayton T. Brown, Inc., “Our hearts go out to those on the front lines as we all hope for an end to this rampant pandemic in the near future.”

With limited in-house production ability and material sources changing daily, DTB received donations of unused transparency from local schools in Levittown and Connetquot, which have been used as shield material. With help from local material sources, DTB hopes to continue manufacturing as many face shields as possible for local hospitals.

DTB’s face shield design is derived from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) doctor-approved design – available here. Please follow NIH guidelines on how to best outfit the shields, as well as CDC PPE cleaning guidelines to sanitize any shields before delivery.

DTB would like to thank the following employees for their immense support on this project: Zach Auclair, Barry Barone, Mike Cervino, Al Chiesa, John Groh, Chris Hardecker, Adam Jamrozek, Steve Kelly, DJ Landwehrle, Lauren Leonelli, and Chris Vaccaro.
